Five Fine Things from a simple weekend
The past few weeks we have had some very chill weekends at home. I love spending the first month of the year not traveling, nesting, organizing, and generally recalibrating. For this last weekend in a really nice streak, Rich and I went on a date to Rosella, one of the 12 restaurants on a list I made of places in NY I really want to get to this year (inspired by my friend Priyanka Aribindi). Before dinner, we got foot massages, which is even better than a drink sometimes! The meal was incredible, and I highly recommend going, and getting a seat at the sushi bar.
1.) Enamelware: This past week I was in Hudson, NY for a team retreat and we spent one day shopping along the main street. I picked up this cute set of three nesting enamel bowls that I’m very excited about. I didn’t know of this brand before. I love the casual nature of enamel and that I can use these to serve food to Richie as well as for a perfect little trio for appetizers. I also got two little condiment containers, which are good for olive pits, hot sauce, or anything else that needs a tiny serving dish.
2.) Warmth (and Saline) for Cold. The whole second half of January I was fighting a cold they never fully took me out, but seemed to linger much longer than I would have liked. My mom is always good about reminding me that colds hate warmth - warm foods, warm showers, warm clothes. It’s good to remember that even a few minutes of being outside without gloves, or eating yogurt and salads instead of oatmeal and soups is unproductive for fighting a cold. In addition to focusing on that, I have been committed to my Alkalol Nasal Wash. I keep it in my shower with a bottle of distilled water so that it’s really easy to use every morning. I find it so much nicer to use in the shower than over the sink, and the reason I like this brand is I find their device so simple and easy to use compared to a neti pot.
3.) The Only Tuna you need to know: I mentioned this brand briefly in the letter I shared with all the goodies my mom stuffed my stocking with, but didn’t give it a full review. I have known and loved this tuna for awhile but kind of rediscovered it after she gave me some over Christmas. It is THE BEST and if you like good tuna it’s totally worth seeking out. It’s tuna belly so it’s more flavorful and fatty than typical tuna, and doesn’t have that same flakiness. It’s $19/tin on Amazon, which is a bit high; you should be able to find it for a few dollars less at local specialty stores. But honestly, it’s worth the price and delicious on its own, over a salad, on toast, or with hummus and crackers.
4.) Standing Steamer: I hate ironing and I hate steaming so I decided to make an investment in hopes it would make me like this chore a little bit more. Because getting out the ironing board is a big barrier to entry for me, I chose to embrace steaming. I went with this Jiffy Steamer, a higher end option that’s kind of the OG in the garment industry and seems to have lots of great reviews. It’s also American made and fits perfectly into a spare closet we have. Since owning it, I am so happy. It heats up fast, works very well, and is always ready to go. I love that it holds so much water so I’m not having to fill it up constantly like I was with my old travel one and that it has the hanger built on it, because I didn’t have anywhere that was a good option for steaming my clothes against. Also, I bought this little thing which is helpful and give you more control when steaming.
5.) Jewelry Organization - My jewelry trays were one of the many places at home that I tidied-up in the past few weeks as I made my way around the house doing mini organization projects. I’ve used these WOLF trays for years and love that they allow me to see my jewelry all laid out. They are meant to stack on top of each other which would work well if you had them stacked on a dresser or something but I have mine in the perfect little opening of this console that we have in our bathroom. It fits four of them, allowing me to just pull them out one by one and always leave them unstacked and uncovered which I love because if my jewelry is not easily visible and accessible, I find I never change it out.
